Jon Pepper, 25, is the reigning Harvey Curtis Sussex Road Race Challenge champion and current leader of this year’s series. He is a three-time winner of the Sussex XC Champs, and finished an excellent seventh in this year’s English National XC Champs

How long have you been running competitively?
14 years.

Proudest running achievement/PB?
Winning the UK Inter-Counties XC & World Trial as an under 20. I managed to execute the race exactly as I planned and I was so elated to win.

Current target race?
Virgin London Marathon on 13th April 2014.

Average weekly mileage over last eight weeks?
95 miles.

Favourite training session?
3x 6 miles at marathon pace! Always a challenge but gives me so much confidence going into a marathon.

Worst thing about running?
It does have a tendency to dominate your thoughts if you do a lot of it. Its addictive nature it sometimes a good aspect, but it can mean you miss out in some respects.

Road or trail?
Trail.

Flat or hills?
Flat.

Favourite running shoes?
Saucony A6 racer — they are literally perfect for me.

Best piece of training advice you’ve ever been given?
Faster is not always better.

What do you know now that you wish you’d known when you took up running?
Good or bad performances happen for a reason and knowing these reasons can be massively beneficial.

Favourite post-run treat?
Peanut butter on buttered toast.
